Winter Intake 2027/28, Working Backwards.
The winter semester begins in October 2027. Most university deadlines fall around 15 July, and uni-assist needs your file several weeks before that, so the applications that succeed are the ones started roughly a year ahead.
- Sep to Dec 2026: profile evaluation and university shortlist
- Jan to Mar 2027: documents, translations and attestation
- Apr to Jun 2027: motivation letter, CV and applications filed
- By 15 Jul 2027: university and uni-assist deadlines close
- Aug to Sep 2027: blocked account, insurance and visa appointment
- Oct 2027: winter semester begins
Documents You Will Usually Need.
Every university publishes small variations of this list, and one missing attestation is enough to delay your admission by a full semester.
- School leaving certificate
- Degree certificates and semester transcripts
- Passport copy
- Detailed CV in the European format
- Motivation letter for each programme
- Language proof: IELTS, TOEFL or a German certificate
- Letters of recommendation, where asked for
- Attested translations of non-English documents
Once the offer arrives, our German language courses get you to the level your course expects and our student health insurance guidance makes sure you pick a plan the university and visa office accept. Admission Questions, Answered.
Do I need to know German to study in Germany?
Not for English-taught programmes, although many universities ask for A2 or B1 so you can manage daily life and part-time work. German-taught degrees usually expect B2 or C1. We tell you exactly what your course requires.
What is a Studienkolleg and will I need one?
It is a preparatory year for applicants whose school qualification is not treated as equivalent to the German Abitur. We confirm in the first consultation whether you need it or qualify for direct entry.
How much money do I need to show for the student visa?
A blocked account is the usual route. The required amount is set by the German authorities and is revised from time to time, so we confirm the current figure and help you open the account correctly.
When are the winter intake deadlines?
Most winter semester deadlines fall around 15 July, and uni-assist needs your documents several weeks earlier. For the Winter 2027/28 intake that means applying by July 2027 for an October 2027 start.
Is a public university in Germany really free?
Most public universities charge no tuition fee, only a semester contribution of a few hundred euros. Private universities and some specialised master programmes do charge tuition.
Can I work while I study?
Yes, within the hours allowed on a student residence permit, and graduates may stay on to look for a job after finishing the degree. We support that step as well.
