German CV Format 2026: How to Write a Lebenslauf That Gets Interviews

The German CV format is one of the most common reasons strong candidates from India never hear back from German employers. Your experience may be excellent, but if your Lebenslauf looks like a three-page Indian resume with an objective statement and no dates, a German recruiter will often move on within seconds.

This guide explains the German CV format for 2026 step by step: what to include, what to leave out, how to show your German level and how to send a complete application. It is the same checklist we use when we prepare CVs for clients in our job placement programs.

German CV Format: The Basic Rules

  • Length: one page for freshers and early-career applicants, two pages at most for experienced professionals.
  • Order: reverse chronological, so your most recent job and degree come first.
  • Exact dates: use month and year (for example 03/2022 – 08/2025) for every role and every course.
  • No gaps without explanation: a six-month gap is fine, but write one line about it (job search, language course, family reasons).
  • File type: always a PDF, never a Word file, and ideally one combined PDF with CV, cover letter and certificates.

German recruiters scan for facts. Short bullet points with numbers (team size, volume handled, systems used) work much better than long paragraphs.

What to Put in a German CV (Lebenslauf)

1. Personal details (Persönliche Daten)

Name, full address, phone number in international format (+49 or +91), a professional email address and, optionally, your LinkedIn profile. Many German CVs still include date of birth and nationality. Leave out religion, caste, marital status, parents’ names and passport numbers. They are not needed and can work against you.

2. Photo (Bewerbungsfoto)

A photo is not legally required in Germany, but it is still very common. If you add one, use a professional headshot with a neutral background and business clothing, placed at the top right. A cropped selfie or wedding photo does more harm than having no photo at all.

3. Work experience (Berufserfahrung)

Job title, company, city and country, dates, then three to five bullet points with results. Write “Picked and packed 250+ orders per shift with 99.8% accuracy” rather than “Responsible for warehouse operations”.

4. Education (Ausbildung & Studium)

Degree, university, dates and your final grade. If your degree is listed in the anabin database or you have a ZAB statement, mention it here. It reassures employers about recognition.

5. Language skills (Sprachkenntnisse)

Use the European CEFR levels: Hindi – native, English – C1, German – A2 (B1 course in progress). Never write “basic” or “fluent”. A recruiter cannot measure those words, but they understand A2 or B1 instantly.

6. Skills, certificates and interests

Software, driving licence (class B, forklift licence), first-aid courses and relevant certificates. One line of interests is fine and can start a conversation in the interview.

7. Place, date and signature

Many traditional German CVs end with city, date and signature. It is optional today, but it still looks professional for roles in logistics, nursing and hospitality.

Common German CV Format Mistakes Indian Applicants Make

  • Writing a “career objective” at the top. German CVs do not use one; put that energy into the cover letter.
  • Sending the same CV for every job. Match the keywords of each job posting, especially for online application systems.
  • Listing every school certificate from class 5 onwards. Class 10 and 12 are enough if you also have a degree.
  • Using a Europass template without editing it. Many German recruiters find the default Europass layout long and hard to scan.
  • Hiding the German level. Even A1 shows effort, and it is often the deciding factor for Ausbildung and hospitality roles.

The Cover Letter (Anschreiben)

A German application usually has a one-page cover letter. Keep it to three or four short paragraphs: why this company, why you fit the role (with one or two proofs from your CV), your availability and visa situation, and a polite closing. If the job ad is in German, write the letter in German; if it is in English, English is fine.

Always address a named contact person if the posting gives one. “Sehr geehrte Frau Becker” reads far better than “Dear Sir/Madam”.

Attachments: Certificates and References

The German CV format also covers what comes after the CV itself. German employers expect supporting documents in the same PDF: degree certificates, mark sheets, experience letters and language certificates. German employers also give formal references called Arbeitszeugnisse. If you worked in India, an experience letter on company letterhead with your role and dates does the same job.

Translate key documents into English or German. For visa purposes, follow the translation and legalisation rules of the German mission in India.

German CV Format: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a photo on my German CV?

No, it is not mandatory. It is still common, and a professional photo can make your application look complete. A poor photo is worse than none.

Should my CV be in German or English?

Match the language of the job posting. For German-language postings, a German CV and cover letter make a strong impression even if your German is still at A2 or B1.

How long should a German CV be?

One page for freshers, two pages maximum for experienced candidates. Anything longer is usually shortened by the recruiter’s attention span, not read.

Can I use the same CV for Ausbildung and job applications?

Use the same structure, but adjust the focus. For an Ausbildung application, highlight school results, motivation and German level; for a job, highlight experience and results.
